Used in
Residential and commercial air conditioning and heat pumps; Direct expansion (non-flooded) chillers; R-22 retrofits in air conditioning and some commercial refrigeration
R-407C (GWP 1,774) is above the 700 limit that EPA's Technology Transitions rule applies to new residential and light commercial AC, heat pumps and comfort-cooling chillers from January 1, 2025. EPA's May 2026 amendments let systems built from components made or imported before 2025 be installed until that supply runs out, existing systems can still be serviced, and Chemours still offers R-407C as an R-22 retrofit.

Saturation pressures computed with CoolProp 8.0.0 (R407C.mix) on October 10, 2026, gauge pressure at sea level. Checked against Chemours and Hudson Technologies published charts at 10 points; largest difference 0.46 psi. How these numbers are made.
What R-407C is and where it is used
R-407C is a zeotropic blend of R-32, R-125 and R-134a (23/25/52 by weight). Arkema says it was formulated to closely match the properties of R-22, and Chemours calls it the closest performance match to R-22 in air conditioning. Arkema lists residential and commercial air conditioning, chillers without flooded evaporators, and some commercial refrigeration as its uses, in new equipment and as an R-22 retrofit. It is ASHRAE safety group A1. Its 100-year GWP is 1774 (AR4) or 1624 (AR5).
How to read the R-407C chart
R-407C has a large temperature glide, so the bubble (liquid) and dew (vapor) columns are far apart and picking the wrong one causes a large error. At 65 psig the dew point is 41.2°F and the bubble point is 30.2°F, a glide of 11.1°F. At condensing pressures the glide is still 8.3°F at 280 psig. Chemours' A/C guide uses the saturated vapor value for superheat and the saturated liquid value for subcooling.
Superheat: always use the dew column. A suction reading of 63 psig converts to 39.9°F. Subtract that from the suction line temperature.
Subcooling: always use the bubble column. A liquid line reading of 280 psig converts to 115.3°F. Subtract the liquid line temperature from it.
The figures below are worked examples at assumed coil temperatures, not targets for any unit:
Suction: at a 40°F evaporator dew point, R-407C reads about 63.2 psig. At a 45°F dew point it reads 70.7 psig. R-22 would read 68.6 psig at 40°F.
Head: at 115°F and 125°F condensing (bubble) temperatures, R-407C reads 279.0 psig and 319.2 psig, against 242.8 psig and 278.0 psig for R-22.
Charge to the superheat or subcooling target from the equipment maker.
Service and retrofit notes
Charge as liquid: Arkema says R-407C should be charged as liquid to prevent fractionation. Where vapor is normally charged into a system, install a valve in the charging line that flashes the liquid to vapor.
Oil: Arkema says POE must be used, since R-407C does not mix with the mineral oil or alkylbenzene in most R-22 systems. For a retrofit, its flush procedure brings the original oil below 5% of the charge.
Seals: Chemours says R-22 retrofits need replacement of critical elastomeric seals.
Equipment limits: Arkema says not to use R-407C in centrifugal chillers or other flooded-evaporator equipment because of its high glide.
Charge size: Arkema's retrofit procedure starts at about 90% of the standard R-22 charge, going up to 95% if necessary.
Where R-407C stands now
New residential and light commercial AC and heat pumps must meet a GWP limit of 700 from January 1, 2025, apart from systems built entirely from components made or imported before 2025. EPA's SNAP list includes A2L refrigerants such as R-454B and HFC-32 (R-32), with GWPs under 700, for new equipment of this type. EPA says existing systems can be serviced and repaired throughout their useful life, and both Chemours and Arkema list R-407C as a retrofit for R-22 systems. See R-22 vs its common replacements.
